Cyber advice for homeworkers to avoid cyber criminals exploiting Covid-19

Due to the latest advice from our UK government, more & more business and companies are asking their employees to work from home. So, to aid companies, the UK’s Cyber Security Agency has issued guidance to keep data safe from criminals trying to use the virus for exploitation.

It comes as more workers resort to working from home, in response to the latest recommendations from the Government aimed at slowing the spread of Covid-19.

It warns that devices at home have a higher chance of being stolen or lost, so any data must be encrypted & safe to ensure that it is secure from being breached. The advice is not to leave devices, whether using a private or company, unattended, especially if in a public place. When the device is not in use, it must be kept somewhere safe.

Another warning is to beware of emails scams linked to the Covid-19, these range from selling cures to asking for financial donations, be vigilant with these types of ‘phishing’ scams. There are even scam emails claiming to be from the World Health Organisation (WHO) These emails are trying to gain rewards both in financial and sensitive data.

Recently in the US, cyber criminals having even posed as centres for ‘Disease Control & Prevention’ copying the official websites to gain passwords and even requesting bitcoin donations to fund fake vaccine cures.

So, to surmise, for the majority of us working from home, where our temporary office space may be a kitchen table, a spare bedroom, or a small area in the lounge, the sound advice is to be careful when receiving emails, if in any doubt, check it our further.
