Do you really need to use antivirus software these days?

As we all know, technology is racing a long, changing and reforming, to aid us in our daily lives, but like Ying and Yang, with the good side of these amazing strides comes the bad side. The cybercriminals are working just as fast to keep ahead of changing technologies and creating malicious programs with the intent to either steal something or create havoc or both!

The answer is plain and simple, we need to keep our devices protected.

I know that most of us think that not having antivirus software installed will not really affect them, after all, who would be interested in our little lives and our private data? Well, believe me, the hackers are interested, personal data is more valuable than oil today, and can fetch incredible prices. You may have already been infected by malware and not even know it, it will quietly sneak onto your PC or other device, and maybe lie dormant, hidden from view, but all the while, it will also do something you do not want it to.

To help combat this we need a good reliable antivirus software. The name maybe is a little outdated now calling it ‘antivirus’ as really viruses are only one element of ‘nasties’ that can infiltrate our devices today. Malware being one of the most common.

You might think that you are careful when you are online, visiting reputable sites and downloading from official sources like the Windows Store, or iTunes. But here is the thing: You're never truly careful if you are going online completely unprotected. The same applies when using our mobiles and other online devices.

Would you ride a motorcycle without a helmet? Even if you are careful, there's potential for disaster.

The people coding viruses and malware know exactly how to get it out to the wider world. That is why it still exists.

Windows 10/11 do have a free tool built in to help protect your device, but this is not really enough in the ever-changing online world, especially as we are all now mostly reliant on our smartphones or tablets to do our bidding online.

Sadly, you do still need antivirus software in 2021/2022. It is not necessarily to stop viruses anymore, but there are all kinds of miscreants out there who want nothing more than to steal and cause mayhem by getting inside your PC. It sounds scary, but because much of our lives are now conducted online, the threat is as real as ever.

Don't think it won't happen to you. That is precisely when it will.
